JOB DESCRIPTION 

Position Title:            HS/EHS Cook

Department:              Early Childhood Programs HS/EHS

Supervisor:                Center Manager

Position Status:        Non-Exempt, 40 hours/week

Starting Wage:          Grade

POSITION SUMMARY: The primary purpose of the Cook position in the Eastern Idaho Community Action Partnership Birth to Five Program is to prepare and serve food in accordance with the USDA CACFP regulations, Head Start Performance Standards, and state/local regulations and guidelines. The Cook performs all job responsibilities in a safe manner and prepares meals and snacks for children, volunteers and adults eating at the site.  The cook occasionally provides food for special meetings and events, assists in developing menus, and recruits parent volunteers to help in the kitchen.  

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide nutritionally well-balanced meals and snacks for children in the program and for parent activities.

  2. Ensure safety is a priority in performing all job responsibilities.  

  3. Clean and sanitize food preparation area daily.  Washes dishes, utensils, counters, pots, pans, floors, operates dishwashing machine, and maintains a sanitary work environment.  Performs other cleaning tasks as needed. 

  4. Prepare daily mealtime setups.

  5. Work together with teachers to provide monthly nutrition experiences for the children.

  6. Maintain and complete required documentation and records.

  7. Attend menu-planning meetings and training.

  8. Recruit and train kitchen volunteers.

  9. Become familiar with performance standards, USDA/CACFP guidelines and work plans.

  10. Provide customer service in reception, greet and direct visitors at the site. 

  11. Follow step-by-step activities as outlined in content area plans and policies and procedures.

  12. Participate in professional development, sometimes off-site, at the request and support of supervisor.

  13. Must be responsible, and able to handle confidential material, organize effectively, and work independently.

  14. Perform other relevant responsibilities as required by the program.

 QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).  Experience in food preparation and serving to a large group is necessary.  Experience in maintaining records; including the ability to maintain records on a computer system or the willingness to learn.  Knowledge of basic nutrition, food storage techniques, and proper sanitation techniques.       

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret regulations.  Ability to communicate effectively both in oral and written form; bi-lingual skills are an asset. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate and apply figures and amounts such as fractions, percentages, and proportions to practical situations.  

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to interpret and apply commonsense understanding in order to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Working knowledge in the use of computer and all common office machines required.  Adequate typing skills are necessary for this position. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, and REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must have a valid Idaho driver’s license, a good driving record, and proof of current automobile insurance.  Must also have access to a privately owned vehicle to use in completing work responsibilities as needed.

  • Food Handlers Course must be completed within 30 days of hire and kept current thereafter.

  • Pediatric CPR/First Aid Certification must be obtained and kept current thereafter

  • Required City Childcare Licensing must be obtained and kept current thereafter

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to bend, lift, sit, move about, hear and speak.  Required to be on feet for prolonged periods of time and will perform repetitive movements.  Other physical abilities include carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, stooping, reaching and kneeling.    
  • The employee frequently is required to use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls. 
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Employee is required to properly use safety equipment as is appropriate to the work; preventing injury to self or others, while adhering to all policies and procedures.
  • The noise level may be high from kitchen equipment and students at mealtime.  
  • Employee will experience frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, etc., from stovetops and ovens.
  • Employees will be exposed to cutting and slicing equipment and machines with moving parts.
  • Performs under strict meal deadlines; required to time task for completion in proper sequence.  Ability to work independently, making decisions that insure efficient operation of the kitchen.
  • The employee may occasionally be exposed to hazardous chemicals and appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn.
  • The physical environment may include fluorescent lighting and air conditioning.
  • Occasional driving to complete food supply purchases.  Some travel may be during winter driving conditions.

 

EMPLOYMENT IS CONDITIONAL UPON RESULTS OF THE FOLLOWING:

Criminal History Clearance.

Successful Drug and Alcohol Screening.

Successful Physical Capacities Examination and TB screening results.
