Thank you to the Walmart Foundation

Thank you so much to the Walmart Foundation for the $25,000 grant that allowed us to improve nutrition at the Haven Shelter in April 2014.

We were able to buy perishable food such as fruits, vegetables, meat, milk, cheese for homeless families that do not have access to food stamps or enough income to purchase them on their own.
We were also teach families to prepare nutritious inexpensive meals so that they get the proper nutrition.
We had on site gardens at the homeless shelter to provide as much produce as possible and taught homeless familes to care for the gardens as well as prepare nutritious meals for their families from the gardens. Children were encouraged to just pick produce and eat it for a snack so they get used to more fresh produce. Alot of these kids are just used to eating a can of something to get through the day. We are trying to instill in them habits that they will carry through out their lives
Alot of the food that our clients are eating is high in calories and not nutritionally balanced. Alot of canned foods are high in sodium and fat. This grant allowed us to show nutritious eating is fun, tastes good and leads to better health.
