Fluoride - What is it and do we need it?

Fluoride is a naturally occuring compound that helps prevent tooth decay.    Fluoride protects our teeth in two ways - systemically and topically.

Topical (applied to the surface of the teeth) fluoride stregthens teeth already present in your mouth (toothpaste, mouthrinses, professionaly applied fluoride foams, gels, and varnishes).

Fluoride tablets taken systemically (swallowed) will put low levels of fluoride in saliva and plague providing topical protection.
